How It Works |
|
| |
The tooth is made up of 3
layers:
1. Enamel - non vital (dead) tissue like nail does not renew
itself which is translucent, always slightly porous.
2. Dentine - vital (living) tissue, constant renewal, yellow
color - has tiny channels (Tubes) leading to pulp (core) of
tooth
3. Pulp - Contains nerves, blood vessels.
Discoloration - happens when a film caused by saliva (salivary
pellicle) coats the enamel surface with chains of stained
bacteria (chromites) which cris-cross like branches of a
tree inside the enamel, which then prevent light from
penetrating and reflecting back.
This is a constant cycle as people age - creating more and
more discoloration over time. Another reason for
discolouration is when the Enamel wears thinner and becomes
more translucent - discoloured dentine then shows through
more, over time older people - darker teeth.
Teeth whitening process:
1. Protection - Firstly, the Therapist will put a cheek
protractor into the client’s mouth to keep their lips from
contact with their teeth throughout the treatment. A
protective layer of gum dam is then applied to the gum
margin to form a protective barrier from the hydrogen
peroxide
2. Hydrogen peroxide gel (35%) - The peroxide gel is mixed
with a thickening agent into a blue paste and applied to
enamel surface (visible area only- not behind tooth).
Clients may feel tingling/fizzing sensation within teeth
during treatment (Hydrogen peroxide oxidising within enamel)
however in almost all cases, this immediately stops when the
gel is removed from the teeth.
3. Plasma arc light (white light- extreme end of light
spectrum) - is directed onto teeth for 10 mins. This light
is used to accelerate the breakdown of Hydrogen Peroxide
into Oxygen + Water i.e. penetrates the enamel - oxidises
(releases oxygen) - whitens and can clear chromogenic chains
within enamel.
4 Hydrogen Peroxide gel - The Gel is then removed from the
teeth with a suction device after each 10 minute application
however some gel will remain within the tooth structure for
24hrs after the treatment. This will make the enamel more
porous during this time - full whitening effects are seen 24
- 48hrs after the treatment has been carried out.
5 Further applications - the gel is then re-applied and the
procedure repeated depending on how many applications are
required.
Please note — there is no structural damage caused to teeth,
under current dental and medical guidelines. |

F.A.Q. |

Does Teeth Whitening Really
Work?
This is a common question that is asked. The surface of
teeth contain millions of microscopic pores and over time,
organic compounds from food, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee and
tobacco etc., settle into these pores and cause
discolouration of the tooth enamel. Almost all natural teeth
respond to the process. However, there are some individuals’
teeth that take longer than others to whiten, such as those
with tetracycline antibiotic staining.
How Does The Whitening Gel Actually Whiten Teeth?
The main ingredient in all teeth whitening products is
hydrogen peroxide. This hydrogen peroxide turns into water
and oxygen, which penetrates the enamel and almost all types
of stains are lifted out of the porous enamel. Results of
testing and measured results are indisputable. In short, the
whitening gel is activated by the moisture, (saliva), within
the mouth and it is in this activated state that it releases
the oxygen to the teeth and the whitening process begins.
The laser light speeds up the whitening process.
Will Teeth Whitening Damage The Enamel Of The Teeth?
Research continues with regard to teeth whitening products
and procedures. However, research data, to date, shows there
is no risk to the enamel of the teeth, other than the
advised 24-48 hours temporary sensitivity.
Will Teeth Whitening Hurt The Soft Tissue, (Gums)?
People with periodontal disease, (gum disease), or excessive
caries, (cavities), should be treated for these conditions
prior to using any form of teeth whitening products, or
services. The active ingredient in the gel itself is safe,
but if prolonged sensitivity to the soft tissue, (gums),
does occur – more than 24-48 hours – it typically flags an
existing problem not normally associated with the whitening
product itself but rather with the dental or oral hygiene of
the person using the product. In such cases the client
should consult their dentist.
Are There Any Side Effects:
A small percentage of users experience increased sensitivity
to hot and cold, or minor gum irritations. These symptoms
usually subside within 24-48 hours after the whitening
process.
Does Whitening Work On Veneers, Crowns, Bridges, Fillings?
The whitening products and services will not whiten crowns,
veneers, bridges, fillings. However, they will clean them to
their original colour. Nevertheless, it must be noted, that
the users own teeth may become whiter than the colour of
their veneers, crowns, bridges, fillings and these may need
replacing.
How Long Will The Results Last?
This depends on the system that is used. The “laser”
procedure will stay noticeably whiter for 18 – 24 months,
however, periodic touch-ups, one ten minute “laser”
treatment, usually every 6 – 12 months, should be performed
to keep the smile at its brightest. Never the less, each
clients’ unique combination of age, diet, tooth structure,
together with their oral hygiene, will influence the long
term results.
Who Can Benefit From Teeth Whitening?
Almost anyone over the age of 16, who have their own natural
teeth, wishing a more confident vibrant smile. However, for
those that are pregnant, or nursing mothers, you should
contact your doctor before using any teeth whitening
products. |
